BEGINNING JAPANESE I

Introduces Japanese, both spoken and written. Emphasizes grammar, pronunciation, idiomatic expressions, hiragana, and katakana. Includes relationship between language and culture, and oral-aural drills will be stressed. Equivalent to two years of high school Japanese. JPN 101A

INTRODUCTORY ELEMENTARY JAPANESE

Offered: ALL

Introduces first half of JPN 101, both spoken and written at the survival level including cultural topics. Includes essentials of grammar, pronunciation, idiomatic expressions, Hiragana and Katakana. JPN 101B

CONTINUATION OF ELEMENTARY JAPANESE

3 UNITS

Pass/No Pass or Grade is Allowed

Prerequisite: JPN 101A or equivalent.

Lecture 3 hours

Offered: ALL

Continuation of JPN 101A, both spoken and written. Covers essentials of grammar, pronunciation, idiomatic expressions, Hiragana and Katakana. Emphasizes relationship between language and culture through basic interpersonal communication and authentic communication. Equivalent to second half of JPN 101. JPN 102

BEGINNING JAPANESE II

5 UNITS

Pass/No Pass or Grade is Allowed

Prerequisite: JPN 101 or JPN 101B or equivalent.

Lecture 5 hours

Offered: ALL

Provides continuation of Japanese 101 with emphasis on spoken Japanese. Introduces Kanji (Chinese characters). Equivalent to three years high school Japanese. [D; CSU; UC] (Formerly: JPN 130)

JPN 201

INTERMEDIATE JAPANESE I

5 UNITS

Pass/No Pass or Grade is Allowed

Prerequisite: JPN 102 or equivalent.

Lecture 5 hours

Offered: ALL

Third semester of Japanese. Reviews all structures learned in the first year. Offers students an opportunity to acquire communicative skills while emphasizing an awareness and appreciation of Japanese culture, art, and history. Emphasizes further study of grammatical principles, composition, and continued oral practice. Equivalent to four years of high school Japanese. [D; CSU; UC] (Formerly: JPN 220)

JPN 202

INTERMEDIATE JAPANESE II

Prerequisite: JPN 201 or equivalent.

Fourth semester of Japanese. Reviews all structures learned in the first three semesters. Offers students an opportunity to further develop communicative skill while continuing to emphasize a deeper awareness and appreciation of Japanese culture, art, and history.
